Jet Ski Rental Dallas Presents: A Journey Through Lake Lewisville's Rich History

Embark on a historical voyage with Jet Ski Rental Dallas as we explore the captivating evolution of Lake Lewisville, formerly known as the Garza-Little Elm Reservoir. Nestled in North Texas, on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River in Denton County near Lewisville, this reservoir has transformed over the years into a central hub for water-based adventures.

Lake Dallas and Garza Dam

Originally engineered in 1927 as Lake Dallas, the construction of the Garza Dam laid the foundation for a reservoir with a capacity of 194,000 acres-feet and forty-three miles of shoreline. For over three decades, it served as the primary municipal water source for the city of Dallas.

The renaming of the Village of Garza to Lake Dallas

The renaming of the Village of Garza to Lake Dallas and the federal government's attempt to rename the lake as Lewisville Reservoir in 1960 led to legal confusion. Clarity was finally achieved in the mid-1970s when the lake received its official designation as Lewisville Lake.

Hydropower and Unprecedented Freeze

In 1991, the City of Denton installed a hydropower facility at Lewisville Dam, contributing to sustainable energy practices. Notably, Valentine's Day weekend in 2021 witnessed a historic freeze, causing large parts of the lake to ice over for the first time since its creation.

storage capacity and flood control

The 1940s and 1950s brought about the need for increased water storage capacity and flood control. Responding to this, the United States Army Corps of Engineers undertook the construction of the Garza-Little Elm Dam, which was completed in 1955. This transformation integrated various water bodies, resulting in the expansive Lewisville Lake, now boasting 183 miles of shoreline and a capacity of 436,000 acres-feet.
